SCOUTbox is a monthly outdoor and adventure subscription box for scouts. You can expect to receive 4 to 9 camping and outdoor gear items as well as a few snacks and accessories. Each monthly box costs $40, although the company doesn’t state the specific value of the items inside since they fluctuate on a month-to-month basis. All boxes ship on the 15th of each month.

How It Works

This camping and outdoor subscription box is curated by Eagle scouts for other scouts.

The goal is to provide interesting and useful outdoor gear while helping to educate young people.

Each box is created with a specific educational purpose in mind. For instance, one month the delivery might be built around a knot-tying skill.

Part of the reason they create their monthly boxes with a skill-based focus is to help scouts learn new skills and accomplish badge-based tasks.

Each monthly box contains roughly 4 to 9 outdoor gear items.

Examples of what you can expect to see include:

  • Multi-tool
  • First Aid Kit
  • Headlamp

What Makes SCOUTbox Unique?

The most obvious differentiator is its scouts-related focus. Not only is the included gear chosen with scouts in mind, but it’s also curated by current and former scouts.

Though all of the gear items have multiple different uses, the majority also have the application to help current scouts learn new skills and accomplish a different badge-related task each month.

The company already has plans to launch unique new features as they continue to grow.

Most importantly, they have plans to launch several new monthly subscription box choices in addition to their current generic offering. These include boxes specifically curated for girl scouts as well as adult scouts.

They also hope to release rank-specific boxes in the future to make it even easier for scouts to learn new skills and pass through the scouting ranks in their organization.

Note that paying for several months upfront saves you even more money while increasing the value of each monthly box.

The company also gives you the option to purchase one-time “Random” boxes that include leftovers from past monthly deliveries.

The “Random” boxes are for those that want gear right now – not once the next month’s subscription box is sent out.

Another option is the “Adult Leader” box.

It comes filled with gear curated specifically with adults in mind. It runs for $50 for the one-time box. There is currently no “Adult Leader” subscription plan.

Finally, the company maintains a small online store that stocks several of the more popular items from past boxes.

You can buy these items separately from the monthly boxes by visiting this store – you don’t even have to be a subscriber.

Company History

SCOUTbox was started by former scouts for current scouts.

It was founded by Eagle Scouts (and brothers) Will Wohler and Chris Tarantino in Connecticut.

After a lifelong involvement in scouting, including current leadership roles in their Connecticut scouting organization, the brothers recognized the need for a subscription-based scouting gear box.

This service was born out of that realization. And it has grown from humble beginnings into a successful monthly subscription company.

In addition to their generic box, the brotherly duo has plans to release even more scout-based boxes in the future, including those based on rank and also a box specifically for girl scouts.

Throughout their company’s growth, Will and Chris have maintained their focus on curating educational boxes rather than purely product-filled boxes.

Each of their boxes contains a guidebook that they write to help scouts of all ages learn about the included gear, use it effectively, and accomplish new badge-related tasks with it.

According to the founders, “scouting is in the blood,” and they plan to continue updating and improving their monthly subscription box with input from scouting organizations around the United States.
