Julep Maven subscription boxes deliver beauty products on a monthly subscription schedule. Each box contains full-size beauty products according to your preferences. My Maven boxes contain over $40 worth of products, and Maven Luxe boxes are valued at over $60. Boxes begin shipping out on the 27th of each month.
Each subscription box arrives with free shipping and includes items the company chooses based on your answers to a beauty quiz. Two tiers of beauty boxes are available. Subscribers can customize their boxes by previewing each month’s items during the Reveal, which takes place from the 20th to 24th of each month.
This level subscription includes nail polishes and products at a value of $40 or more. Your box is completely customizable, so you choose what goes in it during the Reveal period each month and can add extras.
Luxe products cover all beauty categories and contain $60 or more of goods. You can customize the box according to your product preferences. Choose your products during the Reveal or add on extras.
Other product options include a Secret Store which only members have access to. Products and discounts are accessible via members’ online account pages.
Gift packages are also available. You can order 2, 4, or 6 boxes for monthly delivery and choose the first delivery date. Gift subscriptions do not include automatic renewal, and you will receive a notification when your gift recipient redeems their subscription.
Julep brand products are also available for purchase via the online store and through other retailers. When you order directly from the company website, next day and expedited shipping options are available. Free standard shipping applies to orders over $10.
Subscribers to the Julep Maven service receive free 5-10 business day shipping each time they shop at the website’s store.
The company received an A rating from the Better Business Bureau, but the reviews are nearly split 50/50 negative versus positive. Customer complaints center mostly on billing issues, including account cancellation not happening and overages charged instead of using reward amounts.
The BBB also highlights a case in which consumers sued the company because they claimed its free gift offers were not free. Consumers also complained that the “free” offers didn’t clearly disclose that the company required an ongoing subscription to receive the free items.
An initial offer stated that consumers could receive a free product but didn’t indicate that the free offer required a paid subscription. In response, the Julep Maven company cleared up their billing summaries and paid money in product donations and attorney fees, and the case was closed.
However, the end result did not place the company at fault but rather focused on clarifying policies and advertising claims for future promotions and products.
Positive company reviews suggest that subscribers appreciate the ability to opt out of monthly delivery, skipping months according to their budget. Excellent customer service via phone is another perk that customers report with Julep. Although you have to call or email to make many account changes, the process appears to be easy with a host of beauty advisors handling phone service.
Reviewers also like that the products are full-sized and that each person can customize their monthly delivery.
Monthly shipments go out beginning the 27th of each month. Shipping processes in waves that last a couple of weeks. You will receive a tracking number when your box is sent out, and shipping takes 7 to 10 business days. Addresses outside the US may require a longer delivery window.
Julep ships to the United States, US Major Outlying Islands, and Canada. Their products are not available for international shipping at this time.
If the company’s Julep Maven FAQ page doesn’t answer your questions, they are available for inquiries via phone. There are customer service beauty advisors who can assist you, and there are also parlor locations with physical stores that you can visit.
Cancellation is not available online through your Julep account. To cancel, you must call or email one of the company’s Julep Beauty Advisors.
Be sure to cancel prior to midnight on the 24th to avoid charges for the next month’s box. Alternatively, you can choose to skip a month and not receive your box nor be billed for it.
Jane Park is the CEO and Founder of Julep. She was born in Korea but came to the United States at the age of four. Her early journey with watching her parents make their way in life influenced her future entrepreneurial spirit.
Jane helped market her dad’s frame shop and manage the family business, skills she took with her as she ran teams of consultants on big projects and collaborated in a variety of industries.
When she founded Julep, Jane had just left a job at Starbucks, where she worked for four years as an executive. Her business model focused on customer feedback, and subscribers to her product lines today are often asked for their opinions on each item they receive.
Julep also incorporates beauty parlors where Jane tests products on real women and solicits feedback to tweak the products before putting them on the shelves. Early innovations included nail polish applicators that make it easier to self-apply polish plus an app for the brand that makes membership and shopping easier.
According to Jane, Julep is about making beauty bold rather than just “pretty.” She also stays involved in the brand via monthly previews of product lines, live Facebook chats, and Maven Meetups across the country where fans can test products and help brainstorm for future ones.
