Ipsy is a makeup subscription service that delivers a customized selection of beauty products each month. Each delivery contains an assortment of five makeup products of various types that are custom-tailored to subscribers’ beauty profiles. Customers can expect to save up to 80 percent off retail pricing of the makeup items. Monthly subscriptions ship mid-month and arrive within seven to ten business days.
First, subscribers choose either a monthly or full year subscription option. Then, they must create an account to log in. Once you select the type of subscription you want, you will fill out a beauty profile with your product and makeup preferences.

Once you subscribe to the classic Ipsy Glam Bag, you also have the option to “upgrade” to the Glam Bag Plus, which contains full-size products instead of a variety. There are two bag options with the company: the Glam Bag and the Glam Bag Plus. However, the company is constantly rolling out new offers, such as add-on options, and existing members typically have the first opportunity at ordering them.
Because the Ipsy Glam Bag Plus is a newer option, some subscribers may have to join the wait list to have a chance at subscribing. You can have both options, however, once your place in line comes up to order the upgraded bag.
Ipsy reviews on Highya give the company an overall score of two stars out of five. A total of 34 reviews show a majority that are negative, with many subscribers lamenting shipping delays or missing packages. Other subscribers were dissatisfied with the types of products they received, feeling that their beauty profiles were not used as part of the product selection process.
Other Ipsy reviews on the BBB website are similar, with a total of 80 reviews averaging two stars out of five. While the BBB rates the company with an A+, the majority of customer complaints note that subscribers either never received their products or were charged for the next shipment before receiving the prior one.
Positive reviews centered on how attentive customer service is via social profiles and email, despite there not being a phone number to contact them at. Many reviewers were happy with the products they received and the quality of those items.
Ipsy reviews on Consumer Affairs averaged under two stars out of five, with many reviewers stating that they were not happy with the quality of the products nor the service when they decided to cancel or complain. Many reviewers explained that it was difficult to reach customer service and that often, there was no response via social media or email.
The positive reviews appreciated the quality of the products, particularly the sample sizes, and enjoyed trying new brands. Many reviewers liked that they could also purchase those brands in local stores if they wanted to keep using the products after using up the samples.

The original creators of Ipsy were Michelle Phan, Marcelo Camberos, and Jennifer Goldfarb, makeup lovers who were inspired by YouTube makeup gurus and fun and innovative looks.
The company started in 2011 with accessible and affordable products with a focus on making beauty all about the subscribers. Marcelo Camberos has served as the CEO since 2011, but countless beauty gurus, bloggers, and vloggers also serve as faces of the brand.
In fact, the company doesn’t purchase the products it sells in its bags—brands provide them for free for marketing purposes. The company barely invests in advertising, either, since their network of beauty gurus promotes the bags and products for them. The tradeoff is that vloggers and other supporters receive mentoring, access to studio space, and other perks from being affiliated with the brand.
Although the subscription model hasn’t changed much over the years, the products are constantly rotating. And with the help of the company’s “creators”—beauty gurus and YouTube personalities—there’s always a new tutorial, product test, or guide available to view or read.
